Our Instructors & Staff Members
Our Instructors have spent many years devoted to training in the art of Taekwondo and other martial arts and have attained a certain level of expertise to qualify them as teachers and also mentors.
Through extensive testing, certification and tournament level competition, our staff has attained mastery in this martial art and now enjoy sharing their skill and passing it on to their students. Here are a few of American Martial Arts Academy's instructors and other staff members, starting with Joanne Nelson:
Joanne Nelson
(Kwan Jang Nim/7th Dan)
Master Joanne Nelson has been studying and/or teaching Martial Arts since 1980. She currently holds a 7th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. In addition Ms. Nelson is certified in Inayan Eskrima/Kadina De Mano, Sinawalli, and Larga Mano. Ms. Nelson has taught self defense to many different organizations for the past 20 years. Ms. Nelson believes that self defense should be taught with realism and has recently introduced the EZ Self Defense curriculum into the core curriculum at American Martial Arts Academy.
Ms. Nelson recognizes the uniqueness of each individual and tailors the programs to meet the needs of each student while upholding the values, standards, and tradition of Tae Kwon Do.
Ms. Nelson believes that no one should be excluded from Tae Kwon Do because of physical or mental challenges. Tae Kwon Do can be effective in making these challenges less emphasized, while encouraging the individual to discover and triumph in their strengths.
Mike Nelson
(Kyo Sah Nim/3rd Dan)
Mike Nelson has been training in Tae Kwon Do for the past 23 years. Mr. Nelson currently holds a third degree black belt. He has competed and placed in many local,regional, and national championships. Mr. Nelson currently teaches the Okazaki system of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu along with WTF style sparring classes to instill competiton in the schools future competitors.
